Historical Sketch

Since its inception in 1980, the McNeese Archives has actively collected oral history interviews resulting from both organized projects and individuals’ efforts. This collection is the result of those efforts to document the history and culture of Southwest Louisiana through oral history. The Archives will continue to add to the collection as interviews become available.

Several other Archives collections contain oral history interviews, including the Veterans History Project Collection, the Mediterranean Oral History Project Collection, and the McLeod Lecture Series Collection.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of oral history interviews that the McNeese Archives collected since its inception in 1980. The earliest interview session involves the staff of St. Patrick’s Hospital in Lake Charles talking with survivors of Hurricane Audrey in 1957. Most interviews date from the 1980s through 2010. Archives staff members have transcribed most of the interviews and copies of those text files are available upon request.
